Pakistan and Bangladesh Bilateral Relations – An Overview

Today we Discuss Pakistan Relation with Bangladesh. After the partition of the subcontinent, Bangladesh at that time named as East Pakistan was integrated with western Pakistan because the majority of its population was Muslim.

It was announced as the eastern provincial wing of Pakistan and remained the part of Pakistan until 1971.

Currently, Pakistan Relation with Bangladesh is satisfactory.

It covered the territory of the modern country of Bangladesh.

Geographically it has no direct connection with Pakistan.

East Pakistan currently known as Bangladesh shared its border with India and Burma with a coastline on the Bay of Bengal.

People of Pakistan and Bangladesh visited each other only through sea and air routes.

Pakistan and Bangladesh History

In the beginning time of partition, both sides had to face week relationship due to different aspects.

Language dispute was one of them, as Bengalis demanded the Bengali language as the National language and eastern Pakistan demanded Urdu as a national language.

Bangladesh at that time was called eastern Pakistan and the rest was called western Pakistan. Some other hot issues were born due to ethnic discrimination, less religion autonomy, weak central government, and poor relief efforts after 1970 Bhola cyclone, which affected million in East Pakistan.

Why did Pakistan Split from Bangladesh?

Different issues and conspiracies created by India caused a harsh distance among the people of both sides.

Unfortunately, the time had come when both sides selected different leaders to lead I.e the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was selected by the majority of Bengalis and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had become the first selection of western Pakistan.

Under all such pathetic circumstances, the election held in 1971, and that step, unfortunately, lead to a war that highly affected both nations.

India played a wicked role and add fuel to the fire.

After the interruption of international powers the war was ended but many on the term of the separation of East Pakistan, which later emerged as Bangladesh. Many Pak soldiers were made as a prisoner by Bangladesh forces.  And there was the end of so-called relations between the two.

Current Relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan

  • Pakistan and Bangladesh spend 24 years as a single state. But after segregation, as many years have been spent, both still experience deep freeze relationship. The current Pakistan Relation with Bangladesh can be estimated by the following points.
  • Pakistan had to recognize Bangladesh in 1974 after pressure from across the Muslim world.
  • Bangladesh claimed that Pak forces and govern end did many war crimes during the 1971 war. So it demands Pakistan to acknowledge and apologize for its alleged crimes during the war.
  • Bangladesh executed many workers and leaders of Jamaat-e-Islam because they put great efforts and support for Pakistan during the war. The execution of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in 2013 was highly opposed in Pakistan and led to more hassle relations.
  • Islamabad had asked Dhaka in January 2016, to recall senior diplomat Moushumi Rahman from its high commission in Islamabad within 72 hours. According to Diplomatic sources in Islamabad that Rahman was indulged in “terror activities in Pakistan”.
  • But on the other hand, both countries have some positive aspects in the field of the bilateral relationship. The two countries are founding members of SAARC, and also members of the Developing 8 Countries, the OICand the Commonwealth of Nations. Bangladesh has a High Commission in Islamabad. Pakistan also has a High Commission in Dhaka.

  • Trade activities are also at a slow pace between the two. Pakistan’s export to Bangladesh grew at an average annual rate of 27.6 percent and imports from Bangladesh grew at the rate of 9.2 percent, during the eleven-year period between 2000–01 and 2010–11 after Pakistan became a nuclear power.
  • Now a day’s bilateral Free Trade is essential for both Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is the reason both have decided to finalize a bilateral Free Trade Agreement which will boost the way for opening trade opportunities and will assist the expansion of trade between the two countries.

  2. The relations of Pakistan with Bangladesh are not very great after the freedom of the Bangladesh. Before freedom Bangladesh was the part of Pakistan and Bangladesh like to live in another country just because of the issue of national language. Thanks for sharing.
